If Failure Wasn’t an Option
|
Imagine for a moment that failure wasn’t possible in your life, and you were guaranteed to succeed at anything you attempted. How might that change your circumstances? Would you be fearless in pursuing your goals? Would you effortlessly step over obstacles in your path? Would you be able to rise above the pessimistic comments you receive from others?
What would it be like to know that you couldn’t fail, no matter what? How would that affect the achievements you’ve made in the past, and how would it alter your current aspirations?
This exercise may open your eyes to a few powerful insights!
• You’ve been holding yourself back. Sometimes it’s easy to trick yourself into thinking that you’re giving your full effort to your goals, but when considering the possibility of failure, you may realize that you’ve been treading carefully. Since failure is a distinct possibility, you may be settling for lesser goals that you feel confident you can handle.
Of course, a problem arises when you do this. You end up setting goals that don’t really motivate you! The smaller goals may be okay, but if they’re not what really get your blood pumping, you probably won’t be willing to work as hard as you would toward something that really matters.
• You may fear success more than failure! One surprising insight that people have when they consider what they would do if failure wasn’t an option – nothing! They realize that the thought of succeeding at their goals makes them feel even more intimidated than the possibility of failure. Did you have the same realization? Sometimes staying in limbo can seem more appealing than achieving your goals because your current circumstances may not be thrilling, but at least they are comfortable and familiar.
The problem here is, of course, that nothing in your life can change until you decide to change it! If you never develop a strong belief in your own capabilities, you may as well stop setting goals altogether. The good news is that if you’re willing to push forward despite any feelings of fear or uncertainty, you’ll probably find that you’re much more capable of handling new challenges than you think.
• Failure is a choice. Take a moment to think about times you may have failed in the past. Do you notice anything obvious about them? How about the fact that failure didn’t happen until you did one of two things: stopped trying, or never tried at all.
Ouch. It’s not fun to hear that, but it’s true. Failure really ISN’T an option unless YOU say it is! This insight can change your life if you internalize it. What if you stopped believing that failure was an option for you? What if you decided that you’d never quit, never give up, and simply keep persevering toward your goals until you achieve them? Failure would cease to exist in your life, that’s what would happen!
